UK P&I Club, provider of P&I insurance and other services to the international shipping community, has released an updated version of its Carefully to Carry publication to highlight the most current thinking in the industry around the safe carriage, loading and storage of cargo.

The book encapsulates the full range of potential issues and dangers around the transporting of cargoes, from the characteristics and risks inherent in specific goods, hold preparation and hatch covers, to best practice when loading and unloading. Outlining and expanding on all major international cargo regulations and guidelines, it also includes detailed checklists, information on draught surveys and guides to preparing cargo plans.

A near exhaustive range of cargoes are covered within the guide, including timber, gases, grain, steel and other metals, bulk goods, refrigerated goods, liquid bulk cargoes, packaged cargoes and more. Use of this book will assist in reducing both the possibility of expensive cargo damage and the number of tragic accidents and injuries that unfortunately continue to occur.

Stuart Edmonston, Loss Prevention Director at UK P&I said: “As a Club, we are committed to ensuring safety standards are constantly maintained at a high level and periodically updating our literature is part of this effort. By encouraging best practice around the handling and storage of potentially dangerous cargo, this book will hopefully assist in reducing the number of tragic injuries and incidents that unfortunately continue to occur.”

“Crew members who familiarise themselves with this guide and its recommendations can significantly reduce the possibility of cargo incurring any damage, with all the resulting costs that this can bring.”
