The governments of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana have signed a memorandum of understanding linked to the construction of a deepwater port at Techobanine in the Matutui´ne district of Mozambique, in addition to a connecting railway line.
Work is expected to begin in 2012 and take approximately four years to complete and cost $7 billion.The port will occupy an area of 30,000ha, of which 11,000ha will be taken up by industrial units. Among the commodities to be transported to and from the port will be agricultural products, fertilizer and minerals, of which coal will be the most important.
