A contract has been awarded for the construction of a new quay at the Port of Sohar in Oman to accommodate Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs). The project is being taken forward by an Indo-Italian joint-venture, Saipem Afcons, while the associated dredging contract will be implemented by Van Oord. The quay, which will be 1,380 metres long, will become operational in the first quarter of 2011 and be capable of accommodating vessels of up to 400,000dwt.
