The Port of Santos in Brazil is spending $824 million on increasing its capacity to handle dry bulk traffic. This will be spend over a five-year period and result in nearly half this type of traffic moved entirely by rail within the port. Existing track is being refurbished and a new intermodal terminal created.
Sugar is the main commodity handled and should bypass the growing congestion at the port by switching to rail. Of the total investment, $159 million will be invested in new warehouses, terminal links and equipment such as ship loaders, all of which were placed undercover. At present, 30% of potential operating time is lost due to rain.
