The Port of Tilbury (POTLL) and Glencore Grain UK Ltd have signed a deal to handle and distribute large volumes of animal feed for livestock producers across the UK.
The arrival of the Dyna Voyager bulk carrier on 1 July with its cargo of high-protein, soya bean animal feed from Argentina, was the first vessel to arrive into Tilbury under the new agreement. The high-protein soya was discharged quickly over the course of a week with Tilbury’s dedicated labour working 24 hours per day.
The port’s two harbour mobile cranes were used to discharge the cargo into an eco-hopper which controls dust emissions and accurately weighs the cargo before it is transported via conveyor into one of Tilbury’s specialist animal feed stores. The store — 5 Shed — is one of the UK’s newest stores with the capacity to hold 60,000 tonnes.
Commenting on the deal, Stuart Wallace, divisional director at the Port ofTilbury said:“We are delighted to be working with Glencore who are taking advantage of Tilbury’s location and our expertise in handling and storing feed for onward distribution around the UK.”

The port is a significant distribution centre, covering over 850 acres and is well positioned to access the M25 orbital motorway and the rest of the UK's national motorway
network. In addition, there are direct rail connections within the port, with access to the whole of the UK.
The port offers: y 34 operational berths; y over 16 independent working terminals; y over 7.5km of quay; y over 500,000m2 of warehouse space; y over 7km of road within port estate with excellent transport access; and y London’s only cruise ship terminal.
The port is now recognized as Britain’s ‘greenest port’ and has recently been nominated for a number of awards for the outstanding environmental initiatives which have been delivered over the past few years.
