DD Shipping NV, part of the Square Group, is a storage and transshipment company for dry bulk and general cargo. The company operates two terminals along the Brussels-Scheldt sea canal - one of the most important inland shipping routes in Belgium. For more flexibility on their two quays, the transshipment experts from DD Shipping NV have invested in a stable caterpillar portal solution: with the economical SENNEBOGEN 870 Hybrid E-Series, the loading and unloading of heavy-duty piece goods and bulk goods is quick and easy.  
 

DD Shipping NV in Puurs is located at the Wintam sea lock and benefits from the ideal location between Antwerp and Brussels. The sea lock in Wintam is 8.80 meters deep, 250 meters long and 25 meters wide: ships with a capacity of up to 10,000 tons can pass it and dock at DD Shipping's quay. A second quay was only recently inaugurated at the port specialists, which will also go into operation soon.

"We made a conscious decision to use a mobile version of the material handler so that we can then use it flexibly on both quays", reports Geert Keeris, Managing Director of DD Shipping, about the investment and realignment of the company in cooperation with sales and service partner SMT Belgium When purchasing the new material handler, several factors were decisive: "With the SENNEBOGEN 870 E we now have a stable, mobile machine with a large material handling capacity that is both comfortable and ergonomic for the driver." 

PORT LOGISTICS MADE EASY WITH A CATERPILLAR PORTAL AND SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

With a clearance height of around 5 m, trucks can easily drive under the machine and be loaded, which saves a lot of time. This means that storage spaces are not unnecessarily occupied, the waiting times of the ships are drastically reduced and there are practically no longer any intermediate transports. The driver always has a full view from the cab, which can be raised by 7 m. An additional camera mounted on the stick and the corresponding monitor in the cabin help the driver to be able to reach for the material precisely even in the hull.

On request, SENNEBOGEN equips all port handling machines with a special configuration in order to achieve even more handling performance: The special 25 m port equipment, which is also used at DD Shipping, is made of robust, high-strength steel, which is particularly lightweight and at the same time allows more load capacity due to the weight saving. Because the Belgian port specialists have to process various different materials, the special configuration pays off, especially when loading heavy piece goods: “Our ship today contains 2,162 steel wire spools. At peak times we delete up to 160 bobbins per hour with our SENNEBOGEN ", reports Geert Keeris about the operation shown.

The so-called hydropneumatic storage principle works in a similar way to a spring that is compressed and releases its energy again when it is relaxed: the force released compensates for the weight of the boom and raises it without any additional energy requirement.
