Terminales Portuarías del Pacifico began construction in November last year of a new minerals terminal in the Mexican port of Lázaro Cárdenas, requiring investment of $50 million. The initial phase of the terminal should open in December 2011, consisting of 350 metres of quay capable of accommodating Capesize vessels. In addition, there will be 25ha of stockpile area able to store up to 3.5 million tonnes a year.
The project is being financed by shareholders GMD, Cementos Mexicanos, the Clisa group and the Noble group of Hong
Kong. The terminal will serve the mining industry in the South and West of Mexico, as well as importing minerals, steel and coke.
