The chairman of CVRD says that development of the port of Nacala and the rail system in northern Mozambique could be a major factor in the development of sub-Saharan Africa. The company, which is operating an opencast coal mine at Moatize, believes that copper from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as exports from Malawi, will benefit from fully operational port at Nacala.
Despite being a natural deepwater harbour — the best in East Africa — the facility is currently underused. However completion of the 900km Moatize–Nacala railway across southern Malawi should help boost coal traffic, since the Sena line to Beira cannot accommodate all the coal exports that the basin will produce eventually.
CVRD says that 1.2mt of coal from the Moatize mines will be sold this year, rising to 7mt (million tonnes) in 2012, rising ultimately to 22mt a year.
