Mormugao Port Authority is introducing a number of initiatives, some of which include working with private sector partners, to boost imported coal handling capacity at the port. Mundra-based Adanis, for example, is to undertake some coal handling operations.
Presently, 5 million tonnes of coal a handled annually, although projected growth to 2014 is for 15 million tonnes. However, iron ore traffic, which currently accounts for 80% of total volumes, will remain dominant at the port and is expected to rise from the current level of 33 million tonnes to 45 million tonnes by 2014.
