Chronos BTH has been working with one of Britain’s few remaining family breweries, Joseph Holt Ltd to update its malt intake weighing system.
Working within the confines of the malt weighing room in their Derby Brewery in Cheetham, Manchester, engineers from Chronos BTH have recently replaced an old mechanical scale with a new ATEX compliant CHRONO-BULKT APW in-process weigher.
With access to the malt weighing room being severely restricted, the Chronos BTH engineers carefully designed new infeed and discharge chutes that could be manoeuvred into the existing space. Similar restrictions applied to the APW weigher, which was originally conceived for restricted- space applications such as this.
The old mechanical scale was dismantled in situ and the individual parts were moved out of the malt weighing room. Following the re-configuration of the infeed and discharge chute-work the APW weigher was moved into position and installed. The CHRONO-WEIGHT PC456 weighing controller was mounted remotely from the weigher on the wall of the malt weighing room; thereby enabling compliance with the required ATEX zoning requirements.
“Joseph Holt Ltd was founded in the 1840s and over the last three years they have invested a six-figure sum on the Derby Brewery,” commented Chronos BTH sales director, Mike Simmonds. He concluded.“As part of this process they have undertaken several well structured projects that have helped them increase their control of the brewing process; and the APW malt weigher replacement was one of these projects.”
