The Belarus potash producer, BelKaliy, may well switch consignments from the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda to neighbouring ports because of sediment probl ems, which are impacting on the ability of the port to handle Panamax vessels. Inbound vessels from India and China may well switch to Ventspils, says stevedoring company Klasco, leaving Klaipeda with smaller tonnage. However, in a worstcase scenario, BelKaliy might desert the Lithuanian port altogether.
In the meantime, Klaipeda has announced a project to develop a pier capable of accommodating Baltmax class vessels.
