Itaguaí to have Brazil’s largest bulk minerals terminal

The Port of Itaguaí in Brazil is to issue a tender for the concession of ITG-02 facility, which is a bulk minerals terminal. The 20 million tonne capacity facility will require initial investment in the region of $595 million.

The project, which has already been given the go ahead by Antaq’s Board of Directors, involves a total area of 348,937m². Its main client is expected to be Quadrilátero Ferrífero, and will turn Itaguaí into the most important centre for iron ore export in the country. The concession is for 25 years of operation, renewable for the same period.
Interim general manager of PortosRio, Jean Paulo Castro e Silva, explains that "demand studies confirm that an increase in production is expected at Quadrilátero Ferrífero due to new mines that will come into operation in the coming years”.
He added that the new terminal will adopt state-of-the-art equipment and processes to ensure high overall levels of efficiency as well as low environmental impact operations due to its size and socio-economic impact. It is also PortosRio’s main new concessions and one of the most important in the country.
