Carego Innovative Solutions Inc. is a Hamilton based transportation and logistics leader, with facilities in the Port of Hamilton, Canada, and throughout the surrounding region. Alignment across a multimodal platform has led to identifying and leveraging a host of partnership opportunities.
For more than a decade, Carego has transitioned into new business lines in conjunction with its customers believing that mutual growth yields future opportunity. Through the course of the expanding operations, it has opened more than 20 facilities, adapting to the needs of its customers and constructing unique operations to suit each specific circumstance. Constantly looking for opportunities to increase the efficiencies of customer operations, the leadership team generates solutions evolving from transactional relationships into supporting process innovation. Creating a fundamental change in the customers’ business through the use of engineering and technology is where the company believes the true value of the relationship is defined. “Our unique ability to anticipate customer needs and build this into the model of facilities and processes has saved money and created niche opportunities,” said Carego president and CEO Demetrius Tsafaridis.
Situated on Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) land at Pier 25, Carego’s Plant 19 facility was christened in 2005 and garnered the distinction of being named the first gold certified LEED industrial building in North America. Today it remains one of the most advanced on the continent. The facility includes the ability to automate the load and transfer of steel coils, minimizing its footprint (just 80,000ft2) and maximizing its capacity; perfecting the two-high coil storage model and pushing annual throughput of 2mt (million tonnes). Carego enabled new supply chain routing after introducing a wooden pallet designed for rail transfer of steel coil to Western Canada. Previously, the commodity was not permitted to otherwise efficiently move along this corridor. In 2010, Carego invested further by adding four dock level doors to the Plant 19 building’s west side, specifically to accommodate the new technology supporting the container pallet volumes.
“The level of innovation demonstrated by port users such as Carego exemplifies the value in the partner approach that we take to business development,” said HPA president and CEO Bruce Wood. The port is continually identifying opportunities to add capacity to the service offerings at facilities across the more than 600 acres of waterfront lands it administers. This focus continues to define Hamilton’s port as a leader on the Great Lakes, designing expanded and streamlined operations at all stages of the cargo interface. Carego uses its ability to dispense with conventional views and furnish tailored customer driven solutions. By means of its guiding principal, asset flexible innovative logistic solutions through research and applied science, the company’s growth continues while remaining true to generating sustainable efficient models.
