According to the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Commission (CEPAL)
demand for dry bulk has declined during the last few years in that region. In 2009,
coal, iron ore, grain, bauxite/aluminium and phosphate tonnage was all down
compared to 2008, although the forecast is for these levels to rise slightly in 2010.
However, despite the downturn, available tonnage to transport dry bulk has grown.
