The worlds largest rice importer, the Philippines looks set to increase its share of global imports in 2009 after recent storms destroyed over 1mt of the country’s rice crop. The IGC and USDA both crrently project the Philippines to account for 8.8% of global rice imports in 2009, up from a share of around 7% in 2008. Global rice trade is currently projected to reach 28.3mt in 2009, and grow to 29.5mt in 2010.  

Figures released by the International Sugar Organization (ISO) show that sugar exports from Brazil have remained strong in 2009, with exports in September reaching a new record of 2.5mt, up 0.7mt on Exports in the same month in 2008.   October's imports were down a little m-o-m at 2.3mr, but this figure was still up by around 2% y-o-y.
