The Essar group is to build a 20mt (million tonnes) iron ore terminal at the port of Beira in Mozambique. From here, surplus output from the company’s Mwanezi and Ripple Creek mines in Zimbabwe will be exported. It also plans to build a 20mt capacity coal terminal at the port, although this is dependent on it buying up to additional coalmines in Zimbabwe. Also under consideration is construction of a totally new port to the north of Beira, which will also handle iron ore exports.
