Through its Marine Selfunloaders business line, Cargotec offers a range of MacGregor dry bulk cargo handling systems for self-unloading ships transporting a broad range of dry bulk materials.
The company’s scope of supply includes MacGregor floating transfer terminal systems, self-unloading/loading systems for dry bulk carriers, pneumatic conveying systems and offshore supply vessel equipment.
All products benefit from high-quality design and engineering to ensure the most environmentally friendly, efficient and cost- effective operation possible. Ship operators have access to Cargotec’s global after-sales and maintenance network, staffed by experienced, qualified personnel, that provides tailored levels of service to suit individual requirements.
Recent important product developments include a new full flow gate that maximizes both capacity and discharge rates for Cargotec’s MacGregor gravity self-unloading systems and a new totally enclosed boom conveyor that offers a number of significant advantages.
Anders Ba¨ckstro¨m, senior mechanical engineer comments, “The total enclosure of the MacGregor closed boom results in a truly dust-free operation, but the benefits do not end there. Thanks to its ingenious design, the MacGregor closed boom has an optimal support structure with a smooth upper surface to prevent ice formation and a smooth inner bottom surface to enable easy cleaning.
Service and inspection is also much easier and safer than with a traditional system. There are walkways alongside the belt, allowing safe and easy access to the equipment within the walls of the boom.”
FLOATING TRANSFER BARGES FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIAN OPERATION
In 2008, Cargotec was awarded contracts to supply MacGregor deck conveyor self-unloading equipment to be fitted to two identical floating transfer barges under
construction at Nan Tong TongMao Shipbuilding Co, Ltd in China for Loreto Maritime Pte Ltd, Singapore. The first barge, Magdragon I, is scheduled to be delivered to its owner in August, followed by the second barge later in the year.
Both barges will have an unloading capacity of 4,500tph (tonnes per hour) and they are intended for operation at Cape Preston in Western Australia for transloading iron ore from smaller feeder barges to large oceangoing vessels. The MacGregor deck conveyor equipment for each barge includes transfer hoppers, a telescopic boom conveyor with a maximum length of 39m and a conveyor system.
MACGREGOR TRANSLOADING EQUIPMENT FOR BULK EXPORT OPERATIONS IN INDIA
Last year, Indian bulk export specialists, M/s.VM Salgaocar & Bros. Pvt. Ltd signed an agreement with Cargotec for the supply of a range of MacGregor transloading equipment for handling iron ore at the company’s new terminal in Goa, India. Cargotec will supply MacGregor equipment including cranes, hoppers, a deck-conveyor system with a rated capacity of 2,000tph and a shiploader.

“The system will be tailor-made for the customer to suit its intended operations in Goa,” notes Johan Ericson, Cargotec’s sales manager for Marine Selfunloaders. “Our customer wanted reliable, well-proven and robust technology that is designed for the harsh marine environment and therefore selected Cargotec for the project. Furthermore, we are the only company that could deliver the complete material handling package that included both cranes and the conveyor system.”
The terminal is scheduled to be operational in the latter half of this year.
