The Indian Port of Cochin’s policy towards encouraging grain consignments to switch from bulk carriers to containers is causing alarm among stevedoring companies. Trade unions believe that this could result in bulk vessels having to seek alternative ports. However, the port trust has adopted this policy given a recent labour shortage when handling a recent wheat consignment from Australia.
