It is predicted that, in 2009, coal imports into China will increase by 80%, while exports will fall by around 30%.  The result will be the China becomes a net importer of coal, with up to 35 million tonnes in bound through its deep sea ports.  Russia is one of China's main sources of coal, since its coal is cheaper than that produced domestically.  It also favours Australian coking coal, which is imported directly by large steel mills.
