Castrol Marine’s Castrol Academy, the training tool comprising eleven technical modules, has now been recognized by the Norwegian classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Lars Markusson, project manager at DNV said: “Castrol Academy, among others, plays a vital role in furthering maritime skills and expertise and will increasingly play a major role on the international stage as the maritime industries emerge from recession and seek to expand. DNV is determined to be part of this process.”
Luigi Tedesco, Castrol Marine sales director added: “This recognition from DNV, one of the world’s leading classification societies, underscores Castrol Marine’s commitment to providing the highest training standards in this crucial era for the global maritime industry.
“Castrol Marine is determined to work ever more closely with leading industry players to achieve these goals.”
DNV, which was established in 1864 to inspect and evaluate Norwegian merchant vessels, is one of the world’s leading providers of services for managing risk and safeguarding life, property and the environment.
Its core competence is to identify, assess and advise on how to manage risk whether through classifying a vessel, certifying an automotive company’s management system or advising on how best to maintain an ageing oil platform and focus on safely and responsibly developing business performance.
Castrol Academy, which has also been recognized this year by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), assists marine engineers and other seagoing professionals in developing and improving crew skills and knowledge levels.
It was developed in response to the results of an industry-wide survey conducted by the Institute of Engineering and Technology in which 55% of respondents reported problems recruiting experienced, well-trained technical ship crews.
Academy training encompasses key areas of the marine industry, helping to ensure greater crew capability, and combines traditional print-based modules with interactive DVDs and online assessment.
The eleven modules are: ship types; machinery installations; main propulsion engines; power transmission systems; auxiliary equipment; basics of lubrication; base oils, additives; fuels and specifications; lubrication selection; and used oil analysis.
The Castrol Academy online facilitated programmes combine online, self-study courses and written assignments with online support tools.
The programme guides participants through each step of the learning process.
