A sealed conveyor belt system to transport minerals at the Port of Callao in Peru, which will require investment of $150 million, is due to open in September 2013, according to the Impala Peru´ company. The project is being implemented by the Callao Transport Consortium, where Impala Peru´ holds a majority 30% stake.
An environmental impact assessment has already been approved by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. A concession to operate the 3km conveyor network was granted in January 2011 for a period of 20 years. Once operational, it should replace 90,000 journeys by road, which were due to rise to 130,000 due to expansion of output at the Toromocho mine. In the short term, the network is expected to carry 3.9mt (million tonnes) of minerals, rising to 6mt by 2030.
