The Brazilian port of Antonina in the state of Paraná is to give
berthing priority to vessels carrying sugar and fertilizer. The
aim is to attract overspill traffic from the neighbouring port of
Paranagua, situated some 40 kilometres distant, and also the
port of Santos, where some vessels are having to wait up to
ten days to discharge or load cargo. As a result of this
measure, it is expected that Antonina will receive an average
28 additional calls a month, helping to de-congest some of the
main ports in Brazil, which handled 84% of Brazilian sugar
exports and 50% of fertilizer imports. BC
